there will come a time
when all that matter
we call brain
will dry decay
leaving a hollow shell

we never think of this
for we see death in bright
electronic colored pixels on TV
faces still in agony
in lands too far removed

death is a passing frame
caught in the panning motion
of a hand held camera
daily images on the screen
cut off by the commercials

the cut is brutal but
we need the sponsor
to deliver the expensive
glorified product

he had AIDS at an advanced stage
he was a young artist
a photographer
very weak lying in bed

rising a sudden moment
“take my picture” he said
to a visiting friend with a camera

a polaroid was shot
& as the picture came out
he died in that instant

being an artist is not a trade as
the carpenter the electrician the plumber
not a profession as
the lawyer the doctor
artists do not serve society as
mail carriers firefighters sanitation workers
artists exist in society as a commodity for speculation
or they do not exist
which one could say
is a good definition of our culture

at a press conference a reporter asked
“What about the poor & homeless in America, Mr. President ?”

the president says:
            now wait a minute
we do not throw people in the streets
            our government has deep compassion
for the lives of every american citizen
            everyone is precious to us
            take the hostages for example
            to save their lives
            we do whatever it takes
            using armed force
            if we have to
            the people you see
living in the street or in shelters
            is another story
            they have not taken advantage
of what has been indiscriminately offered
to every citizen in this country
            the poor elderly & homeless
            are the unfortunate cases
who did not properly reach out
            to the wonderful opportunity
of the american quality of life
            why it’s obvious
that the rest of the world
is in the process of adopting
            our free entrepreneurial
capitalistic system
            while some misfortunate ones
            in our country
have fallen short of realizing that vision
            we are a government
            of deep compassion
`           ………..next question please

this body
            in the city morgue
            is not clearly
            male or female
            amazingly
            it has suddenly
            sat up
            hands moving
            each individual finger
            this body got up
            walks directly towards the door
            leading to the street
            joining other bodies
            recently coming out  from morgues
            bodies that seem quite normal
            going about their business
            running in several directions
all listening to a plugged in walkman
