The story of Italian-Americans in Corning is the story of many voluntary immigrant groups – one of courage and tenacity. When Paulina Capozzi came to the United States in 1933, she traveled in steerage with her young child as her only companion. She brought a sea trunk with her few belongings among which were some linens and lace. Explore the experience of Italian immigrants through lace. This exhibition is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Carmen Consoli presents her new album "Missing Ring"
Italy’s top female singer-songwriter Carmen Consoli returns to Joe’s Pub after five previous sell-out performances with two shows on October 1. Her most recent New York appearance was an unprecedented headliner slot at the Joe’s Pub in the Park Series in September 2007. Consoli’s October set is titled “Anello Mancante” (Missing Ring) and features the Sicilian-born auteur on solo voice and guitar. New York audiences will experience an offering of repertoire drawn from Consoli’s more than decade-long career re-interpreted in a minimalist manner, intentionally stripped down to expose the sophisticated essence of her songs. In these performances, Consoli’s evocative songs will be interspersed with engaging insights into her songwriting process, citing influences such as writer/director Pier Paolo Pasolini’s use of Italian dialect , the music of star crossed Roman songstress Gabriella Ferri as well as the work of leading figures from the world of Italian and international cinema.
Presentation of "41esimo Parallelo" film festival. The program will include screenings of a selection of documentaries and shorts from the "Napoli Film Festival '08"
41esimo Parallelo at Film Forum: Alberto Sordi's retrospective: program at www.filmforum.org/films/sordi
Kicked out of drama school, Alberto Sordi (1920-2003), or “Albertone” as he was affectionately nicknamed by his public, first became famous as the Italian voice of Oliver Hardy. From starring roles in two early Fellinis, he went on to become one of the greatest and most beloved stars of the great period of commedia all’ italiana, often portraying the lazy, whining mama’s boy/ladykiller wannabe who still managed to suck up to priest and boss, but capable of dominating performances in the tragic style as well. In many ways he was the Italian Everyman and, even more than Mastroianni or Gassman, the most representative male star of Italy’s movie golden age. As Phillip Lopate wrote recently, “No one better embodied the ‘average Italian’ in all his swagger, cowardice, hypocritical geniality, and reluctant nobility.”

Fifth Ave. from 44th to 79th Streets
Noon to 3:00 p.m.
The parade: 35,000 marchers, over 100 bands, floats and contingents, nearly one million spectators, is the world’s largest celebration of Italian-American culture, will be held on October 13 from noon until 3:00 PM on Fifth Avenue from 44th through 79th Streets and will be broadcast on NBC affiliates and by RAI Italian television.
The parade celebrates the spirit of exploration and courage that inspired Christopher Columbus’s 1492 expedition and the important contributions Italian-Americans have made to the United States. Over a dozen high school bands, as well as virtuosi professional groups from the United States and Italy, will make the march up Fifth Avenue and fill the canyons of midtown with joyous, heart-pounding music. Traditional folk groups will perform centuries-old dances, and cutting-edge designs will be brought to the parade route in displays of the vibrant culture that is Italy today.
